by Valerie Figueroa
From academic excellence to owning multiple businesses all before the age of 21, Cruz Untz’s story serves as an extraordinary illustration of perseverance and achievement. A dedicated student at Texas State University pursuing a bachelor’s in business administration with a major in accounting, Untz is on a trajectory towards greatness, propelled by his unwavering academic dedication and his innate entrepreneurial spirit.
Born in Iowa, his family relocated to Texas early in his childhood. His academic pursuits began at Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, where he excelled both academically and athletically, graduating fifth in his class while making his mark on the football field. However, it was the unexpected opportunity presented by Texas State's McCoy College of Business that set him on the path to his future endeavors.
"When I received a scholarship offer from Texas State, I was like, ‘I’m definitely going there,’" Untz says.
Initially drawn to economics, Untz found a passion in accounting after taking a financial accounting class during his freshman year. Recognizing accounting as the cornerstone of business, he embraced the field wholeheartedly, envisioning a future enriched by endless opportunities.
"Accounting is the language of business," he says. “Everything revolves around accounting, it is the basis of everything.”
Untz’s academic journey at Texas State has been nothing short of exceptional. Embracing the vibrant community at McCoy College, he thrived in an environment where students and faculty alike shared a common goal of excellence. He says he values the relationships he has built not only with fellow students but also with the faculty, whom he describes as supportive and approachable. He emphasizes the power of communication within McCoy College, highlighting the staff’s responsiveness to student inquiries and their openness to discussing both academic and career-related matters.
"My experience in the BBA program has been amazing," he says. “College isn't easy but when you're surrounded by staff that actually care about you, other classmates that are focused like you, it's very easy to succeed when there is so much help and tools to get you where you want to be.”
Beyond his academic pursuits, Untz's entrepreneurial spirit shines through in his various ventures, including a successful Christmas lights service business serving San Antonio and surrounding areas. Despite encountering challenges along the way, his experience and determination have shaped him into the multifaceted individual he is today.
"I've had a lot of businesses, and a lot of them failed," he says. “But that's what made me who I am.”
“I can’t predict the future, so whatever comes my way, I’ll take advantage of those opportunities. Once there's an opportunity, I just go all in.”

Additionally, his consistent presence on the Dean's List and receipt of multiple scholarships throughout his college journey have further underscored his dedication and excellence in academia.
In recognition of his various achievements, Untz was honored with the prestigious Alan & Barbara Dreeben Future Texas Business Legend Award in 2023 and was inducted into the Texas Business Hall of Fame. He highlights the invaluable networking opportunities that come with such recognition and acknowledges the privilege of having access to esteemed figures like Mark Cuban, Warren Buffet, Arch "Beaver" Aplin III, and Kendra Scott, individuals he admires and respects. He describes the award ceremony as an unforgettable experience, including the chance to engage in meaningful conversations and gain insights from industry leaders.
Untz shared his appreciation of the support received from university staff, underscoring the collaborative spirit and encouragement within the business community at Texas State. Looking back at his college experience, he expresses profound gratitude for the opportunities afforded to him by the university.
"Words can't describe my experience at Texas State," he says. “There are just so many opportunities and tools that the university provides students.”
Reflecting on his academic experience at the university, Untz highlights the invaluable lesson of professionalism. While professionalism wasn't taught in his earlier education, college experiences, including accounting classes and college-hosted events, have been instrumental in fostering this crucial skill.
“Being in college teaches you how to be a professional,” he says. “It teaches you how to be your authentic self and how to work in a business environment.”
Looking ahead, Untz has an upcoming internship with FORVIS, a U.S.-based public accounting firm. His aspirations remain as ambitious as ever. With plans to pursue a master of accountancy degree, he is planning to make a lasting impact across his various business pursuits.
“I plan on getting my CPA license and working in public accounting,” he says. “I’m also a real estate agent and I own a business, I just really capitalize on every opportunity I get.”
Yet, amidst his academic and professional pursuits, Untz remains grounded in his commitment to serving others and giving back to his community. He emphasized the importance of not only seizing the opportunities and resources available at Texas state but also of recognizing one's blessings and using them to positively impact others. He highlights the privilege of attending college, urging students not to take their education for granted. He advises aspiring students in the program to leverage their experience and knowledge to contribute positively to society, emphasizing the power of serving others.
"Use your blessing to be a blessing," he says. “We must use our wisdom, talents, and skills for the greater good […] to serve and love others”
Guided by his entrepreneurial spirit, Untz continues to navigate towards a future filled with promise and possibility.
“I can’t predict the future so whatever comes my way, I’ll take advantage of those opportunities,” he says. “Once there's an opportunity, I just go all in.” ✯
